Matting and Framing

Because the CPSA International Exhibition takes place in a gallery setting, artwork must be presented in a way to create a harmonious look and avoid jarring distractions with other artwork in this show. Judges are very much aware of framing, and the presentation can influence their decisions when selecting awards.

The best way to ensure your presentation meets CPSA requirements is to stick with the combination of a neutral-colored mat and a simple frame.

  • Artwork must be wired for hanging (no sawtooth hangers).
  • Artwork should be protected with glazing (acrylic/Plexiglass only) or some kind of fixative or varnish. Glass is not allowed.
  • If used, frames should have a simple shape and be made of metal or wood in muted, neutral tones such as gold, silver, copper, black, white, or gray. Decorative colors and ornately carved or gilded frames are not acceptable.
  • Mats, when added, should be off-white, white or neutral (gray, beige or black). Colored mats are not allowed—though a narrow (less than 1/4 inch) colored inner mat is permissible.

The January 2019 issue of the CPSA news magazine, To The Point, contains an article with more information about framing for the CPSA International Exhibition.
